Schleswig-Holstein is Germany’s northernmost federal state (Land). To the north it borders the Kingdom of Denmark, to the west the North Sea, to the east the Baltic, and to the south-east the Land of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. To the south the Elbe separates Schleswig-Holstein from the Land of Lower Saxony. Situated on this border river is the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. Its city limits cross over into southern Holstein.
