Ministry of Education and Culture issues of Land Schleswig-Holstein
The Ministry of Education and Culture Issues of Land Schleswig-Holstein is responsible for 1000 public schools in the State, and for 1,604 kindergartens. Approximately 25,500 teachers teach about 418,000 children and young people in the schools. Federal Education Minister is Dr. Ekkehard Klug, State Secretary, Eckhard Zirkmann. is the head of administration. The Ministry comprises four departments and has 275 male and female employees. It has responsibility for the Institute for Educational Development in Schools in Schleswig-Holstein (Institut für Qualitätsentwicklung an Schulen Schleswig-Holstein, IQSH), and for the supervision of secondary schools, comprising men and women schools inspectors in the 16 counties and metropolitan boroughs of the State.
The State Education Ministry gives educational and political guidance to schools and kindergartens in the Land of Schleswig-Holstein. It handles the recruitment of personnel for schools and contributes towards the finance of kindergartens, with an annual budget of 60 million Euros.
In the context of educational politics, the Land Government has created an environment for a high quality and easily accessible range of schools. In August 2007, the first Gemeinschaftsschulen (a new type of comprehensive school) in Schleswig-Holstein startet. Furthermore, from the school year 2011/12, all secondary schools, of the types Realschule and Hauptschule, will be combined as Regional Schools (Regionalschulen). The introduction of whole day schooling to state schools will be extended accordingly.
In order to give the young people a good start in their working lives, a sound, general education is provided, along with workshop days, training positions with employers, work experience in the economy, and direct contacts between schools and experts from trade, industry and administration. Promotion of the European vision of the educational system is achieved, among other things, by means of increased bilingual teaching, foreign language classes in primary schools and various partnerships with schools in the Baltic area.
Schleswig-Holstein's culture is diverse and attractive: it ranges from about museums and exhibitions, libraries, and theaters, concerts and events. The Ministry of Education and Culture Issues wants as many people with their cultural open access to culture in all its forms and branches.
