Landgericht Itzehoe (Itzehoe District Court)
The Itzehoe District Court and the four local courts of the judicial district in Meldorf, Itzehoe, Elmshorn, and Pinneberg are entrusted with the legal protection, in the system of ordinary courts, of approximately 560,000 people in the districts of Steinburg, Dithmarschen, and Pinneberg. A total of almost 450 employees, including about 90 judges, are concerned with the accomplishment of the various tasks within the field of the administration of justice.
The Itzehoe District Court is the first-instance forum for matters of civil law, where the amount in dispute exceeds €5,000. In addition, it is court of appeal for legal disputes that have started at the local court at first instance, and the court of administrative complaints.
The district court has various criminal divisions, in addition to ten civil divisions. In criminal cases, the lower criminal division, comprising a professional judge and two honorary judges (jurors), hear appeals against judgments of the local courts. However, the higher criminal divisions, comprising two or three professional judges, with two jurors, hear criminal offences that are charged directly at the District Court in the first instance, because of the significance of the case or the punishment expected.
