The State Office for Preservation of Monuments

The State Office for Preservation of Monuments is a state superior authority responsible for historical and art buildings in Schleswig-Holstein (excluding those in the Hanseatic city of Lubeck). The Monument’s Act of Schleswig-Holstein of 1958 serves as a basis for its work.

The systematic and area-wide registration of monuments, their scientific research and their evaluation regarding art, cultural and historical aspects belong to the tasks accomplished by this authority. Cultural monuments of special significance are entered in a book in which all other cultural monuments are listed – the ”Denkmal-buch”.

The State Office, together with the authorities mentioned below for preservation of monuments, also takes care of the maintenance of cultural monuments. It provides advice to persons responsible for a building project – from the perfect construction of windows related to the preservation of a monument to restructuring works undertaken to historical buildings, ensuring that those works are suited to their condition as monuments.

Highly qualified scientists work in the various departments of the German State Officer, in the process of monument preservation, in monument maintenance, in maintenance of monument gardens, in making an inventory, in building research, in their own restoration workshop, which also offers tutoring, or in the photography workshop. The archive of the State Office for Preservation of Monuments comprises files, maps and photographs dated of 1880.

The Office for Preservation of Monuments supervises churches, castles and property facilities with their manor houses, as well as rural properties, maritime and technical monuments, city residential buildings, settlements, but also gardens and parks.
