State Archaeological Department of Schleswig-Holstein
As main authority for the preservation of historical buildings and monuments, the State Archaeological Department of Schleswig-Holstein has the job of researching and conserving archaeological monuments and archaeological areas. It has the remit and the responsibility of protecting the cultural inheritance of our State.
Schleswig-Holstein plays a very important role within the territory of the Federal Republic of Germany. The State is situated geographically between Continental Europe and Scandinavia. This strategic position is reflected in archaeological monuments, discoveries and treasures. Thus, the archaeology of Schleswig-Holstein, with several such examples, constitutes an important clue to the understanding of European development and history.
The area of responsibility comprises the State of Schleswig-Holstein (excluding the region of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck) as well as the adjacent coastal regions, up to the periphery of the 12-sm-zone, the limit of territorial waters. At the same time, the State Archaeological Department of Schleswig-Holstein is the authority with official supervision of the lesser offices for the preservation of historical buildings and monuments in the counties and cities of the State.
The archives of the State Archaeological Department of Schleswig-Holstein contain over about 240,000 references from circa 120,000 years of archaeologically documented history of the land. The archaeological monuments have been registered in the archaeological records of the State, with effect from 2001 and are accessible from a geographical digital system (GIS).
As a guardian of certain public interests, the State Archaeological Department of Schleswig-Holstein is responsible for the upkeep of archaeological monuments, taking all appropriate measures (vegetation-regulations, erosion repairs). The safeguard of the existence of the monuments takes place through planning controls and, in the case of acutely endangered monuments, by means of scientific excavations. Among its core tasks are the improvement and the presentation of monuments as well as the publication of the results of work and research for publicity to the scientific and wider communities
